The CDC reports that nearly 50% of all adults suffer from some variation of gum disease. If left untreated, gum disease can progress into Periodontal disease, which causes destruction of the bone that supports your teeth. In time, this destruction can cause loose teeth and eventually tooth loss.
Generally, gum disease is slow to develop and there is little to no pain or discomfort until it is advanced. Once periodontal disease has reached the advanced stages, it has the ability to impact your overall health. The ADA and the American Heart Association have made many links to Periodontal Disease and major medical concerns such as Heart Disease and uncontrolled Diabetes. For that reason, early detection and treatment are imperative. It is also important to remember that certain medical conditions can also effect your gums, if you have Diabetes or are Pregnant you may have a higher risk of developing gum disease and Periodontal Disease.
Dr. Koplow and our team of talented Dental Hygienists are highly adept at screening for gum disease and other oral illnesses. We recommend all of our patients over the age of 18 receive a full periodontal disease screening so that prevention techniques can be learned as early as possible. If gum disease or periodontal disease is present, treatment options will be discussed in length and Dr. Koplow will explain his recommended solutions to keep you in optimal health.
Treatments of gum disease can range from better at home cleaning techniques such as proper flossing and brushing, to deep cleanings done in the office by our Hygienists. In most cases of periodontal disease, Dr. Koplow and our Colorado Springs team are able to provide the proposed treatment. If necessary, though, we have a wonderful periodontist to which we can refer you.
